DIY Repair or Go to a Shop?

Use severity, required tools, and safety to decide. Many sensor and EVAP jobs are DIY-friendly; timing and internal engine work usually are not.

Good DIY candidates

Gas cap (P0455/P0442), spark plugs and easy-access coils, air filter, simple vacuum hoses, many O2 sensors with room to work, throttle body cleaning.

Consider a shop

Timing chain/correlation codes (P0016), internal engine noises, transmission codes with slip, airbag/SRS faults, and any repair that needs a lift, press, or dealer-level programming.

Rule of thumb

If a flashing light, overheating, or loss of oil pressure is involved, prioritize safety over saving money. A $100 scanner often pays for itself by avoiding unnecessary parts swapping.
